This past February marked the opening of the first posthumous exhibition of Oscar de la Renta since his tragic passing last October. The exhibition, entitled “Oscar de la Renta: His Legendary World of Style,” was featured in Savannah, Georgia, at the Savannah College of Arts and Design (SCAD) with a display of 70 garments. Each garment was chosen from a number of de la Renta’s close friends and family for whom he was known to design custom pieces. The curator, de la Renta’s longtime friend Andre Leon Talley, honored the designer’s close bond to his clients, friends, and family, celebrating the works manifested out of de la Renta’s artistic genius. Articles of clothing were taken from the closets of de la Renta’s most iconic clients such as Mrs. Mercedes Bass and Diana Taylor, among many others. The exhibition ended on May 3.
On September 8, Skira Rizzoli will release a book, written by Andre Leon Talley, as a monograph detailing the life and legacy of Oscar de la Renta. Sharing its title with the exhibition itself, Oscar de la Renta: His Legendary World of Style will include a preface from Paula Wallace, the president and founder of SCAD, as well as a foreword from Anna Wintour. Leon Talley’s book will present the same 70 gowns, along with a collection of stories regarding craftsmanship and personal tales from the friends and family whose pieces were selected. By revisiting each gown, in conjunction with collected stories, Leon Talley retraces de la Renta’s journey in celebration and remembrance of the exceptional designer.
