Azzaro Makes a Couture Comeback

by Brooke Alpart

The well-known young Italian designer Loris Azzaro originally came to Paris in 1962 where he set up a studio space to design accessories and costume jewelry. Azzaro’s style showed a new, innovative take on dressing with his bead-embroidered lurex and silk jersey dresses. His unique style received extraordinary success until the end of the 1980s. At this time, Azzaro regarded perfume and menswear as more marketable lines, so he turned his talents in this direction. In 2002, Azzaro’s womenswear line made a return when Frey bought the brand. These couture creations were only accessible to the most prestigious customers. Eventually in 2011, Mathilde Costello Branco took over the brand and became the creative director, followed by Arnaud Maillard and Alvaro Castejón who head the brand’s creative direction today. The house has officially announced that there will be a haute couture collection this coming July! These couture pieces have not graced the runway in over 30 years and are now coming back into style fast and furious!
