“Made In NY” Awards

by Chris Meigher

Last night, as the rain poured and the music blared, Mayor Michael Bloomberg and Media and Entertainment Commissioner Katherine Oliver presented the 8th annual “Made in NY” Awards at Gracie Mansion.

What’s remarkable about the “Made in NY” Awards is the devotion to individuals and organizations that make New York’s media and entertainment business thrive. This year’s honorees were top-notch: Tony Award-winning actor Alan Cumming; Project Runway host Heidi Klum; Oscar-nominated director Spike Lee; Tony-Award-winning singer and actress Audra McDonald; president of HBO Documentary Films Sheila Nevins; David Karp, founder of the social networking website Tumblr; and Harvey and Bob Weinstein, founders of the Weinstein Company and Miramax Films. The “Made in NY” Mayor’s Award for Lifetime Achievement was presented to broadcast journalist, author, and TV personality Barbara Walters.

“New York City can lay claim to many of the most talented people on the planet, “ said Mayor Bloomberg, “and with tonight’s ‘Made in NY’ Awards we’re honoring some of the best of them.” Bloomberg’s right: talent is precisely what New Yorkers possess.
