Sotto Sopra: A Pizza Slice of Heaven in the Hamptons

Anyone who’s ever been to Amagansett knows that one “wines” on beer at the Talkhouse and “dines” on pizza at Astro‘s because, like, what choices are there? Well, not anymore…

Recently, Sotto Sopra—owned by Rose Evangelista, cousin of Linda Evangelista—opened at 231 Main Street, serving Northern Italian fare and a steakhouse menu by chef Josh Savi (from Restaurant Patrick Guilabud in Dublin, Ireland). And suddenly, everyone has choices, ordering from a comprehensive selection of Antipasto, Insalate, Le Pizza, Pranzo, Pesce, Carne, Classico Bisteccheria, Piatti Laterali per Due, and Primi Piatti coupled, of course, with a cocktail or wine.

With indoor seating decorated with cedar paneling and floor-to-ceiling windows and outdoor seating with umbrellas, you’re guaranteed a view of the stars. Or movie stars—Alec Baldwin, Blythe Danner, and Cameron Diaz have been spotted mingling over dishes such as Picante (pizza with pepperoni, spicy sausage, ricotta) or Risotto Ubriaco (Arborio rice, red wine, sausage, mushrooms, crispy leeks), as have the likes of Woody Johnson, Michael Kors, and David Yurman.

Quest ventured East recently, securing the reservation of the summer at the popular Sotto Sopra. We arrived at the restaurant, which was more than abuzz with an attractive crowd of weekenders, ordering a round of margaritas (extra salt). The weather was balmy, so we opted to dine outside, indulging in Beef Carpaccio with pickled mushrooms and Robiola Crostini with grilled figs, spiced walnuts, and orange vinaigrette. Afterward, we feasted on Spaghettini a la Greco with shrimp, spinach, and spicy Arrabiatta sauce and Tournedos de Manzo with beef filets, sautéed mushrooms, and red-wine shallot sauce. Everything was shared because everything was yummy and because, you know, that’s the Italian way. Family style!

With Labor Day approaching (womp, womp), Quest was prepared to reserve tables at Sotto Sopra every Friday and Saturday night until the end of the season. Lots left to try, and the scene is killer. Not necessary! Sotto Sopra is open throughout the year, serving brunch, lunch, and dinner on weekdays and weekends to Hamptonites and their neighbors to the West.
