Swellegant, Elegant Parties

Our November issue includes an article on Nick Foulkes’ new book “Bals: Legendary Costume Balls of the Twentieth Century.”

No sooner had the first copies been dispatched from the printer’s when we received a message from curio dealer Thomas Cary, whose Upper East Side apartment is a veritable Ali Baba’s cave of ultra-stylish collectibles in such genres as Old Hollywood, Anglophilia, Art Deco, Midcentury Modern and prepdom — pretty much anything you’d see as a prop in a Ralph Lauren store.

Cary informed us of a similar book from 1987 called “Legendary Parties” by Prince Faucigny-Lucinge. Cary has listed the tome on the rare-book site Abe Books; his description follows:

We’re hereby presenting (2) gorgeous pristine copies (@ a mere $650 per) of this society glam title “Legendary Parties,” chronicling the escapades of the ultra-tres-chic, pre-jet-set crowd, together with a foreward by the late Brooke Astor highlighting (122) pps filled with to~die~for colour/ b&w photos of the most regal balls of the half century (1922~1972), including The Oriental Ball, whose attendees included Mrs. Reginald Fellowes & The Baron Alexis de Rede, and The Proust Ball, attended by, amongst other notables, Princess de Faucigny~Lucinge & The Baron and Baroness Guy de Rothschild! Thus a must~have tome for the intl smart set!
